I've made considerable progress on my 1971 Raleigh Super Course. It's not done yet, but I'm getting there. I had originally planned to incorporate mustache bars on the bike but found that I was smashing them into every corner and door jam in the house. So, in the end, I opted for the hipster specials. Which I swore I would never do. I did however pay homage to my youth and threw on a pair of mushroom grips.

Still to be done. New seat post, new seat, new pedals....and then it'll be time to think about how I want to carry a patch and pump kit.

oh..and I did discover a great spot to photograph my bikes. Happens to be 2 doors down from me.

One thing I know for sure though, is that my Raleigh/Urban Assault Vehicle will be taking several cues from the XO.

If you haven't done any research on these machines I seriously suggest you do. You can start here .

I came across an old 71-73 Raleigh Super Course frame about a month. I made an offer on the frame but it was turned out. Not surprising when I consider how little I had in my pocket that day. But, ever since I've been trying to track down the owner in hopes of making a better offer. Haven't had any luck yet...but I remain undettered. In the interim, I've been tracking down some sweet Super Course builds.

This one here is my current favorite.

Found this one over at Werd today.

The Paratrooper is one of the many folding mountain bikes that Montague offers. Its patented folding design was developed and designed to allow airborne soldiers to drop out of airplanes and helicopters into combat. The 24-speed Paratrooper is advanced with front and rear mechanical disc brakes with brake pad adjustment. Known for its durability and load bearing capabilities, this bike has also developed a following with everyday commuters and weekend warriors.

Now if you're like most and don't need to jump out of a plane with your bicycle. You may like to consider some of their other fine folding options. Like the wonderfully named BOSTON.

Last night I went onto craigslist in search of a bike that would serve as the structure of my winter build. I was hoping to find an old cro-moly MTB frame and fork with a rigid form and tail. It didn't take long for me to come across a 1995 Trek 820 that fit my needs. (Although, I really wish the 92' GT I found had been the right size for me.) For the low price of $50 I have agreed to purchase the bicycle. It might be a tad on the small side, but I seem to prefer bikes that are sized slightly smaller than what the prescribed size would be for me. Must be the old BMXer in me.

The big I'm getting is this exact model. (but, not this particular bicycle...this is a shiny one I found on the interweb thingee. The one I'm getting is not so shiny).

My plan is to strip this bicycle down and build it back up as a single speed with the classic bmx 44:16 ratio.

The bike bike sell-off continues here in my lair. Next up for sale is a really sharp looking 1977 Schwinn Varsity with Camelback top tube. You certainly won't win the Tour de France ontop this machine, but the paint sparkles so you'll look good tooling around the streets. It has a 17" frame....so don't be tall. Just need to be washed and lubed and it'll go. Tires are no longer gumwalls. I had to replace the tires and tubes after purchasing it myself. Local sale only. No way I'm shipping this thing. $50

What's old is new again.
I rode this bike for one season and I can’t begin to tell you how much I love this bike. Hands down the best bike I’ve ever had. It’s 10 times the bike that I am rider. Sadly, I'm moving into the city and losing all of my space for my collection. By the time I move, I'll have only 1 bicycle left...and that will be some crappy commuter bike that I won't be afraid to have stolen.

GHP frame, fork, stem, seat post, seat clamp. Redline cranks. Sun Ringle/Rhyno Lite rims, Shadow Conspiracy seat, ODI Mushroom grips, Tektro brakes, and Wellgo magnesium pedals. Over $900 into it. Weighs in at 22.15lbs. Not too shabby.

I'm planning a move across the country so I'm selling off what remains of my collection. I say this is an 85' but I'm only basing that on the information that was given to me when I purchased the frame. Unfortunately some knucklehead ground of the serial number ages ago. But the measurements of the bike confirm and well as a few other details that tell me that it's a pro-raider frame and fork.

Highlights: Hutch Cranks, Ukai Rims, Suzue hubs, CW bars, A'me grips, BMX Tech-style number plate, Cheg Shin Comp III tires, sweet white pads, Chrome on this bike is bright and clean, incredibly quick bike. Seriously, is the quickest bike I've ever owned.

The Bad. No serial number. No hutch stem (it's a run of the mill tange), Left VP bear trap pedal has dent in it. Currently has new style Sinz brake setup. (I did this because i actually raced this bike at the track last summer and found that the old diacompe MX were seriously outclassed by new braking technology). I do not have the diacompe mx rear brake. I will however, throw in a white and a chrome Lee Chi brake lever.

$405 shipped in the US (shipping to other locations will have to be recalculated)
Please take good care of her. This one is hard for me to part with.

This past memorial day I made the pilgrimage to Winfield, West Virginia to visit my gal-pal's family. While I was in the basement looking through old records, I spied a couple of down trodden and long forgotten bicycles.

In honor of memorial day, I spent the rest of the day breathing new life into these fallen warriors of the asphalt.

The first bike is a blue Murray Monterey 3-speed bicycle that is still in amazing working condition. Why Sarah didn't take this one home with her I will never understand.

The 2nd bike, a 1976 Iverson Cycles Corporation 'Olympic Games' bicycle, was a bit worse for wear but it was definitely the more unusual of the two. Check out all of the Olympic branding on it.

A couple weeks ago one of the Big Cheese's over at Ritte Racing asked if I was available to help them out with their first print ad. As a fan of all things Ritte, as well as being one of their ambassador racers, (albeit the sorriest), I gladly set aside some time to pitch in. When I saw the photos of the concept for the ad, I knew I had made the right choice. The concept was there. It just needed some help coming to life.

THE BEFORE

So, for the next couple of days, I reached into my bag of Photoshop tricks. I pushed some colors here, played with some curves there....cloned, kerned, masked, filtered, tracked, cropped, duplicated, and dodged my way to something I am proud to have been a part of. Unfortunately, my dreams of wild compensation never materialized......despite the grueling hours spent in front of the computer listening to music I love and sipping margaritas. I'm sad to report that a shiny new Bosberg (size L) never arrived at my doorstep.

Behold, the first Ritte Racing print ad.

THE AFTER | Click image for a closer look. Seriously, the copy is awesome and deserves to be read.

To get even more behind the scenes imagery from this shoot. Head over the Ritte's blog.

It surprises me how often I get emails asking for updates on the well-being of my old Casati Cometa. For those just joining the conversation let me provide a quick recap. It is an aluminum road bike that had a 2 inch long crack in the headtube. Despite the overwhelming amount of online advice that was telling me that the frame was junk, I took a chance and paid $50 to a local welder who has a side biz specializing in bicycle frame repair. Its important to note here..that he was very familiar with welding aluminum. That's important. OK, that's about it. You are now caught up to speed.

So...how is it holding up? These days I'm spending the majority of my time on my BMC, so the Casati is not my primary bicycle. But, like The Nationals latest album, it is certainly in heavy rotation. After the weld, I stripped the frame down to bare bones. It's now set up as a no-frills single speed with a demanding 53/16 gear ratio. It requires no special shoes or other cycling accoutrements so it's my first choice for quick spins and 'recovery' rides. I've probably logged around 200 miles on it. I can honestly say that those 200 miles have been completely free of worry. In fact, I treat that bicycle harder now than I did when it was my primary roadie. There may not be any knobs on the tires, but I never hesitate to take it down dirt and gravel roads. Hell, I've even gotten to the point where I rocket down a steep (as in steep enough to sled down in the winter) and narrow dirt footpath near my house. The weld has held.

My advice is this. If you've got a frame that you love and hate the thought of parting with it. Call your local welding shop. Chances are there is someone there who can patch that weld. And for cheap money. The heat from the welding will destroy the paint in the afflicted area...but that's a small price to pay for salvaging a frame you love.

As for how it looks. Judge for yourself. I think she's still one of the most beautiful bikes I've ever owned.

Their latest venture leads into the fascinating world of bicycles which is designed by Anne Lehmanne. As mentioned by the company, it is a classic man’s bike with an urbane style. It has a 50’s inspired lightness and comes in two colors: antrhacite grey and green. Limited to 50, each bike has been hand built by professional cycle builders. They will be sold from October 2010 through the Norman Copenhagen Flagship Store, through their online shop, and selected stores worldwide.

Friday night, I pulled the trigger on my new road bike. Once again I threw caution to the wind and purchased a frame without test riding it. However, at least I took the time and had a proper fitting done.

I chose the BMC SL01 for a few reason. #1. Technology: I loved the theory behind the carbon/aluminum hybrid. The more I read about it, the more I was sold on it. #2. Cost: I was able to find the frameset (frame, fork, headset, seatpost, seatclamp) marked down from $999 to $699 on Competitive Cyclist. That price tag came in $150 cheaper than the CAAD9. No doubt I'll use that $150 for some other upgrades. #3. Availability: I called two local shops to track down a 56cm CAAD9 this weekend and the best they could offer was mid March. That sealed the deal. I'm not waiting until mid March to get back on the road.

So there you have it, soon enough I'll be starting a new chapter with the BMC. I can't wait to get to know it.

There is one thing I should have figured out about myself by now...and that's to not track ebay auctions while I have a beer in my hand. The lethal combination has wobbled my finances on several occasions. A carefree $500 here and $900 there, never feel as fun in the morning. In defense of myself, I must say that I always score great deals when I'm in this wide-eyed tunnel visioned state. I've scored a Dean Duke titanium frame for $600, some Mavic rims laced with DT Swiss/Hugi hubs for $200. Both exceptional deals. The problem is not in the purchase price. The problem is in my lack of forthsight when it comes to bills and/or holidays that are on the horizon. Alas, the deadly combination of eBay, beer, and my iphone reared it's head again last night. While I should have been focusing on the pub trivia on hand, I was instead watching a set of new 2006 Mantiou R7 Platinum forks. By now you know how this story ends. For the purchase price of $242 (shipping included) I am now the owner of these. That $242 isn't bad at all. I thinks it's a great deal. But if you combine that with the possible $275 charge if I win the Leadville 100 lottery along with Valentines day and what you get is trouble.

Time to look under some sofa cushions.

A mere 2.9lbs.

Chances are you'll never see this team pulling the peloton up the French Alps, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth mentioning. Their story is really entertaining and it would appear I'd be a perfect candidate for their team. Makes me wish I was still living in SoCal. But, guys....if you're looking for a DC representative, I'm available. Aside from their racing team these guys also have a killer bike they call the Bosberg for sale. If you look very closely and with great focus, I've been told there is a bike in the photo below.

Despite the extreme cold and snow and ice covered roads the riders were out. The most shocking thing to me was their attire. Unlike myself and my wimpy mid-atlantic brethren, the riders out there weren't covered as if summiting Everest. With dedication like this, it's no wonder they are ranked as one of the fittest cities in America.

I found this over at Velo Cult. If you haven't checked out that blog, you should. They do a great job of there. Some of the photographs are simply breathtaking. Definitely makes me want to elevate my game a bit.

Seeing this bike reminds me of something I used to do as a kids. I'd take a 20" bmx frame and put smaller wheels on it and remove the brakes. Basically...doing our best to turn it into a rideable clown car. Then I rustle up some friends and we'd find the biggest and scariest tree filled hill and try to see who could make it down without leaving their teeth in the trees.

This is a very rare and extremely cool vintage mountain bike with a great little side story to go along with it.

Some history to start things off. This was built in 1979 and it is the second Topanga bike that Victor Vincente of America built out of the 25 he made. In a way both him and Joe Breeze built the first mountain bikes as they both built them in different parts of California without knowing about what each other was doing. This bike has both 20 inch wheels which has some logic. Back in that time 26” rims were steel and low quality. BMX rims were light and strong. Also BMX tires were the best for off road. In the early days of mountain bikes builders were either influenced by 1930’s beach cruisers, BMX or even motorcycles to a lesser extent.

I woke up this morning to find it 54º and sunny outside. That's a far cry from what we had been having here in MD/VA/DC. It also happened to coincide with me finally (3 weeks of waiting) getting my order in from my local bike shop. With my Ellsworth Flight finally road worthy it was time to take it out.

This was my first ride on the bike so there was definitely a lot of stopping and adjusting going on as I tried to dial it in. After almost 30 miles I'm not quite sure I've got it quite right yet. The bike itself is stiff and blazes along on the straights and downhills. It definitely has some get up and go. I didn't push it on the downhill turns so I can't say for certain how it handles, but from all indications it tracks the turns nicely. The one part that I didn't like about the bike was the way it climbed. Granted this could be a product of my inactivity, but there was something about my position on the bike that made it really difficult to get any sort of momentum going on the climbs. And when I got off the saddle I felt like I was too far forward over the handlebars which is very odd because the frame seems altogether too large for me. It's probably poor fitness but I can't rule out that it's the geometry or the sizing of the frame in relation to me. Either way, it's as close as I've ever come to quitting on a climb. But I'm going to hold off on final judgement until I've had some time to get back into shape. The holidays and my recent trip to Alaska have reaked havoc on my fitness (12lbs heavier than my racing weight in Texas and less than 50miles ridden)

Still...I can already tell that it's not going to be that magical fit that I had with my Casati Cometa. Which incidentally, I intend to take to a welding shop and have it repaired. Stay tuned on that one. I've never seen or heard of anyone trying to repair a cracked headtube. Keep your fingers crossed that I don't wind up with a fork thru the heart.

Came across the magnificent Van Dessel outfit out of based out of New Jersey while using my tried and true 'click and wonder' technique on the web. I immediately fell in love with the Country Road Bob bike. The set up precisely what I had in mind for the Fuji I've yet to get started on. A couple of clicks later I came across their WTF (Whisky Tango Foxtrot) bike which is rumoured to be replacing the Country Road Rob. (I hope they keep both)

Our most beloved bike. Year after year, we fall for its single-speed charms. And we're not the only ones. Perhaps you heard what the folks at GQ said: "...the most perfect bike we've seen...you will rediscover the pure happiness you felt when you first mastered riding a two wheeler." That line still gets us all choked up. And how do you improve on "perfection"? Well, somehow we did it. A shade lighter and with the curvy style it had years ago, now along with charm, our Country Road Bob is kinda sexy too. Go ahead, swoon.

Wow...wow....wow. I come across a lot of bikes each and every day that are fantastic. I reckon it's inevitable when you log a couple of hours each day looking for them. But, it isn't very often that I'm blown away by one. Today, I'm blown away by Vanilla Workshop and their racing machines called SPEEDVAGEN. These are undoubtedly some of the most beautiful machines I have ever seen. You really need to check out their site and observe all the details that go into them. I officially have a new bike crush.

It's not entirely a gift to me, because truth be told I sold my DK PRO XL to my younger brother for the price of these wheels (a mere $199) But, I am excited about them none the less. Ever since I started building up my Dean I've known that my wheels and forks were way behind the curve. Now these wheels I'm getting aren't necessary world class, but they are a far cry from where I once was.

DT Swiss/Hugi hubs laced to Mavic 317 Rims with Hayes rotors. Love the anodized silver as well. Going to match up nicely on my Dean.

When I was home for the holidays I found myself rummaging through the old garage. Hidden amongst a few other bikes (one of which was an old Mongoose M1 bmx that I once pristinely restored, gave back to my sister, and is now rotting away again) was my mothers old Shogun Samurai. What makes this Shogun so interesting is the wheel setup. Now my mom is short, 4'11" short. But, for the life of me, I'm not sure why Shogun built the frame with a 26" wheel in the back and a much smaller one in the front. It's an interesting setup to say the least. It does have pretty nice components though with Nitto stem and bar and Shimano 105 Biospace cranks

I did take it home with me though...so I'll add this to my list of projects to play with.

Now, I'm not going to lie, Reynolds 631 steel isn't my first choice for a frame, but it sure beats 4130 cromo. Lots of photos for this one, because the eye candy never stops.

This past weekend was a bike filled bonanza for me. I logged some serious hours searching the internet for deals on a new MTB frame for my upcoming race. And I put two of the bikes I love up for sale (DK PRO and Tommaso fixed gear). At one point I had a deal worked out with a guy in Philly for a rootbeer colored 2009 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo. But, when I hadn't heard from him in a while, I got nervous and went back to tracking an auction I seriously thought I had no business even watching. The auction was for a DEAN DUKE SOFTAIL. These frames retail for easily over 2k. I couldn't believe that with less than 8 minutes to go, this frame was hovering around $350. To make a long story short, the frame is mine for under $600. That's an astonishingly good deal.

Here are some specs and some photos.

Yesterday, I made a new purchase. On a whim, I bid super low on one of those 'make an offer' auctions on eBay....and low and behold I won. I'll admit though, I'm feeling a bit of buyers remorse. I wanted to build this fixed gear up with all used parts so that I wouldn't look like such a hipster noob...but oh well, the price was too good to pass up. So, now I'm the proud owner of a loud as can be orange Tommaso Augusta frame.

So I signed up for the annual Blood Sweat and Gears road race a couple of days ago. It's a race that takes place up in the smokey mountains of NC and TN. It's a soul crushing course. I did this race back when I turned 30 and it nearly broke me. I finished dead last out of all the people who qualified to race the full 100 miles. I came in around 9:14:00. It's a putrid time and one that I fully intend to shatter this year. As a tune up, I'm planning to ride in a MD 63 mile event in April.
