Recycle your old bicycle frame | Turn it into a stool

In this day and age almost anything can find a second life and be recycled. Old bicycles are no exceptions. Wondering what to do with an old frame that is no longer salvagable?  Consider this nifty setup I came across tonight at Big Wheel Bikes in Bethesda. If you put a beer in that water bottle holder I think it would make the perfect workshop stool.

Upcycled Caps: Faction Cycling

I have been terrible about posting of late. My day job has been crushing me and I find so little time to scour the web looking for the latest and greatest. Last night, I finally had a chance to do some recon work. After sifting through thousands of blog posting in my RSS feeds (I kid you not...thousands!) I decided I would post about the Upcycled cycling caps from my friends over in Chicago.

It's safe to say that this product was a success for Faction. Because if you're looking to get one...you're out of luck. They are already sold out. I've got to think though, this won't be the last time these caps will be offered.

HMK 561: Electric Bike

Designed by Ralf Kittmann, this design recently won an IF Design Award.  What makes this working prototype to me is that the energy is actually created mechanically. You pedal, you create energy. The energy is stored and then passed along thru conductive carbon fiber.

The return of the Casati Cometa

Yesterday I picked up my freshly repaired Casati Cometa. For those unaware, it had a 2 inch crack in the headtube. Rather than throw it away like I was often told, I decided to respond to post on craigslist from a fellow offering weld repairs for bicycles. For $50, I thought I was worth taking a chance. Bruce (welder) was a pleasure to work with and even offers a guarantee on his work. So, if you've got a frame in need of repair shoot him a line at bruceal@yahoo.com

Now my bike may never win best in show, but with a little flat black paint it'll look respectable. More importantly, it'll be safe to ride again. New photos to come as soon as I'm done building it back up.

Todays Mail: My New US Cycling License

My renewed and updated license....complete with new club and team info. This little gem put a smile on my face. Can't wait to get that sweet Ritte kit.

Of course I do hope I still get to ride from time to time under the locally grown Dominion Cycling flag.

Lightning Bolts forever: Haro Factory plate re-envisioned

This is from a while back now...but for some it may be new. And frankly, I'm tired of thinking about bike safety.

With Nike 6.0's help, this art exhibit took place before the 2008 Bejing games in honor of BMX's Olympic debut. Playing homage to Bob Haro and his iconinic lightning bolt plate 45 artist created 'their' versions for an auction benefiting the Athlete Recovery Fund. Head here to see the rest of the plates along with bios and artist inspiration for these designs.

God, what I wouldn't give to go ass-sliding with you right now.

Aside from the ass slider plate...this is by far my favorite.

Feds Deem Pedestrians, Cyclists and Motorists Equals

(from Wired)

At long last, the feds have said the needs of pedestrians and cyclists must be placed alongside, not behind, those of motorists.

In what amounts to a sea change for the Department of Transportation, the automobile will no longer be the prime consideration in federal transportation planning. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says the needs of pedestrians and cyclists will be considered along with those of motorists, and he makes it clear that walking and riding are “an important component for livable communities.”
