FREEMAN at last!

This is without a doubt my new bike crush.  Everything about this company makes me happy. The name transports me back to my very first ride as a kid, alone and unsupervised, and that moment when I realized that the bike – meant freedom. Their bikes, their blog, the whole look and feel is just spot on. Oh, and it only makes sense that their kick ass identity was done by Benny Gold.

FREEMAN TRANSPORT is a Montana-based company hand-building bikes in the USA. Using Columbus steel tubing and S-and-S couplings the bikes can be easily disassembled and packed into their signature waxed canvas and leather carrying case – a collaboration with NY-based Billykirk. The case’s 26 X 26 inch dimensions ensure that the bike can be checked onto airplanes with no oversized baggage fee. This unique feature on all Freeman bikes allows for easy assembly/disassembly – with only one simple tool to put them back together – making it easy to ride to and from the airport.

The company was founded in 2006 by the artist and designer team of Nathaniel Freeman and Benjamin Ferencz, both of whom travel frequently and were frustrated by the expense of shipping their bikes and the lack of quality options in the travel-bike industry.  Refusing to go bikeless, Freeman and Ferencz decided to design it themselves.

Our fixed-gear/track model (with or without brakes), is available now, with Commuter, Cyclo-cross and Road bikes planned for 2009.

In addition to bikes, Freeman also makes products for the traveler – hats, clothing, leather goods and bike accessories. Committed to USA manufacturing and sustainable materials, Freeman Transport strives to reduce the impact their lifestyles have on the world.

Swedish inspired Pilen

Pilen concept is a race bike inspired by early Le Mans style, the concept is supposed to create a sentimental bond with the user and also give them the same feeling as if they were driving a sports car. This concept is developed for the Swedish bike brand Pilen cykel in Målilla.

Rocked and rolled in Frederick

I built the Dean Duke up this weekend. Unfortunately, I lost a fingernail in the process! FYI: disc brakes are basically spinning knives.

For the bikes inaugural ride and my first attempt at clipless pedal mountain biking I decided to head out to Frederick MD. I'd been wanting to hit those trails for quite some time. I'd heard great things and was anticipating a day filled with fast single track and challenging and taxing climbs. Craig from Germantown Cycles was the acting ride leader. As for me, I played the part of ride buffoon...and it was a role I performed with great vigor.

Frederick offered all of the challenges I had been expecting and then some. The 'some' came in the form of rocks, rocks, rocks, and more rocks. In fact, less than 100yards into the ride I was thrown off the bike after launching myself off one rock and into a tree. And so went the day. About 30 minutes in I took the cleats off my pedals...enough was enough. About 1hour in my crank arm fell off. Thankfully, I was able to located the bolt. NEVER EVER BUY TRUVATIV FIRE X cranks. NEVER. Oh, I also managed to lose my keys on the ride.

Despite all the mishaps, the ride was great fun and I can't wait to get out there again. Out of the 5 riders only Craig managed to escape without a horrific looking wreck.

As for how the new bike performed – I honestly can't say. I had never ridden on anything that severe with my Jamis so I have no frame of reference. What I did learn was that on a really difficult course, I am not ready for clipless pedals.

I managed to track down some photos of what it looks like out there.

Race Across the Sky: The day after

Last night I went to the premiere of Race Across the Sky with my buddy Adam. I wasn't sure what to expect with this movie, but what I can tell you...was that I certainly wasn't expecting a sold out theater. Adam and I wound up in the uppermost row, jammed in a corner. Perhaps DC is a bit more of a biking city than I give it credit.

The movie itself was thoroughly enjoyable. The history behind the Leadville 1oo was interesting to discovery and seeing the race unfold was great. I love the out and back format of the race. Every rider gets to see one another at some point and to me that's special. There was such a great sense of comraderie amongst the riders. The Leadville 100 is definitely on my must do before I die list. Definitely.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about that movie though, aside from the fact that Lance road the final 7 miles of the race on a flat rear tire and still broke the course record, was that Dave Wiens is 45 years old. Forty-five and still crushing people out there. I mean, crushing people.

In 2008 Dave Wiens has won the legendary long distance race "Leadville 100" for an impressive sixth time in a row, defeating the likes of Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis along the way.
